How should treasure be provided to the players by the GM. Should all treasure found be publicly known by the table o should it by secreted to the finder via index cards or text. Should everyone be aware of what is thrown in the game or should it all be clandestine acquisitions between PC and GM.

All treasure should be announced as it was found. If the party finds a bunch of gear and such, then the party knows. If one person found a something, that person knows. That being said, I feel it is the onus of the person who finds said stuff to share the information with the group, and those who deserve reward should get. Don't be the guy/gal running off in a fight to find the treasure then keep it for yourself. Just because you're a rogue/shady character does not mean you have to steal from everyone, especially the party.

So if a character is separated from the party and finds a dirty goblin with a magic ring that makes him invisible. He dupes the poor awesome little guy and escapes with this one ring. It is then his responsibility to tell the party and share the treasure he received on his own?

He doesn't have to say anything, he earned that on his own

Yes because it causes severe skin and dental issues with prolonged wear. Why not share such terrible things. I think the rings true power is the transfer of gonoherpesyphylitis.

I agree but should the GM make sure that the other players know that our heroic and crafty Halfling found said ring?

Those that never find the gear will say we should all share and be aware of each other's finds but those that do the dirty work and find the goods are going to argue that what's theirs is theirs... the question is who is right?

Unfortunately no. Maybe my response was misunderstood. The treasure should be spread out to the party members who deserve reward, in a manner that befits use of the treasure. For example, a magic axe should go to the fighter, a dagger could go to either a rogue or an assassin, etc. Or say a mage/cleric needed a ton of money to cast a spell that would benefit the party (ex True Res, or Simulacrum). Of course, that's just my opinion, so take it or leave it as you will.

Both are "right".

Well they did the work of finding, avoiding traps (we'll assume they did, because the party isn't aware, so no lightning bolt going off in the distance), etc. Of course if it's something that can't be hidden, like a big weapon or armor, well duh. But something small, well they found it.

Absolutely not. Unless your game is set in a socialistic society, where some do the work, but all reap the spoils... If you are with the party and the party defeats and enemy or finds a stash of treasure or loot, than, yes, it should be divided equally, but with mind to what items will benefit which party member the most.

However, if someone is on a side quest and the acquire treasure or a magical item, they have absolutely no obligation to share or even tell the rest of the party.

Each character needs to be able to keep a certain amount of anonymity if they so desire. Rogue's especially are secretive and have a right to act according to their class.

Okay. A four member party kills a squad of Gnolls. They search the bodies. As GM do I tell the party at large the totality of the spoils or do I tell each individual what they found in secret and leave it up to the party to divvy as they want? In this scenario people are checking specific bodies.

Well in this case I would say everybody knows what's on the body their searching (that they find). Now if they say they also paying attention to the other searches, maybe they see something, maybe not. Of course, there is always Sleigh of Hand or some other distraction. And also, weight, size and noise should play a part, especially to a rogue. I could see a rogue grabbing a full coin purse and making no noise. But what about a fighter with a dex of 10 (non prime)? Could he also pocket that as quietly? So many things that make me not be DM. I'd be turrible.

I agree with Tailor, for the most part. I think in that scenario, you are in a group, and everyone is already expecting the spoils to be divided.

I think if a person wanted to keep something all to themselves, without the party knowing, they should have to roll to make that happen.

A group killing is the groups loot, unless someone is acting sneaky. If said person acts sneaky the DM will be made aware.

If said individual(s) find side loot its their choice on what to do with it since its their loot .... Otherwise wouldn't that be considered MetaGaming? Everyone deserves their secrets and ACES in their pockets. It adds to the story.

True Socialism failed due to one random factor ... Humans.

ALSO, we are playing a group game and if we all know that someone will greatly benefit from a specific item then for the benefit of the party and its survival that person should be considered.
