BEFORE BLACK MOUNTAIN

... A half days journey from the base of the Black Mountains the party prepares to confront the dark forces that lurk within. The authorities of Frost paint a grim picture of hamlets abandoned or destroyed, hordes of Orcs, strangely equipped Giants, and strange behavior from the humanoids of the region. The Outriders of Sham speak of caravans from the west attacked and strange cargo being taken as well as the unprecidented cease-fire between the Hill Giants of the Black and their sworn enemies The Blue Mountain Giants. Individually some of these things could be seen as the sifting of the sands of time, signs of a changng era, but combined it fortells of a darkness slowly falling upon the lands of Earl James Jones.

Van Zan Shazam, Judicator 4th Hael, Justicar of JUSTICE resolutely marches forward determined to once again return to Fort Edifice from an obvious suicide mission. He fears that The Order is either testing him for a greater purpose or has found him expendable. this fear drives him to emulate his mentor and the greatest judicator to ever live, Khan. For him the mission is clear find the chaos, the taint that always threatens order, and destroy it.

Naz Iman, Sinn of the Lionhearts, and Daichi Naillo, try to find their place in these strange lands even as their hearts cry out for their homes that are not only leagues away but years as well. The elves are far removed from an empire that was on the brink of civil war. When the gnome was last home his people were in open revolt against the powers that rule The World Below. they fight to repay a debt and to find a way home.

Chase Showmourne owns a shop in The Coastal Free Cities, arguably one of the richest standing population centers in the world. he's been away treasure hunting for years. All he wants is to return to his brother... hopefully with a bag or two of treasure for his troubles.

Sagitarius, Calm, and Brood all seek a man that they've never met but who's destiny is to save the world from a beast of unparralel power. Alone they have been unsuccessful but with the help of the former Dragon Slayers and JUSTICE they hope that their searching will finally bear some fruit.

Hazaka wanders, lost but searching.

... A half days journey from the base of the Black Mountains the party prepares to face their destinies head on.

ENTER BLACK MOUNTAIN

The party, spear-headed by Van Zan, Teffelyn, Brood and Daichi, reach the base of the mountain of black volcanic rock and begin their climb. Destination reached the game plan is far less clear. There is a dark force behind the Hill Giants of the Black and under it influence the denizens of the mountain have begun to destroy those hamlets and villages nearby. The Giants have been and always will be a part of the region but JUSTICE wants the darkness directing them eliminated. The mission was to reach the Black mountains now there it is a matter of finding their quarry. The party knew to expect Orcs, Giants, Wyverns, and possibly Devils and with those threats in mind they forged ahead.

Six hours of mild climbing finds the party finally reaching a mile long expanse of open terrain scarred by four to five foot fissures. A tracker is not needed to see the multitude of Orc tracks that litter the area and most lead into the fissures. Daichi and Brood explore a random fissure alone due to Van Zan and Tef's abnormal size. But it does make it clear that if the two man-size giants can't fit there is no need to fear true giants. A few hours of searching brings on nightfall and not much else. Daichi reports the sounds of tapping from a cave he found in the fissures but realizes that he and Brood might not be able to deal with what lies in wait, so it was given a wide bearth. Suddenly inspired, Van Zan asks that the Elven Assassin climb one of the huge rock faces and attempt to get a birds eye view of the land. What Daichi sees is the fissures crisscross to create a skull struck by a hammer, the symbol of the Giants of the Black.

It was during his climb down that a hunting Wyvern attacked.

Round 1: Teffelyn moves into position to catch Daichi. Van attempts to strike up sparks and get the creature's attention. Brood hides behind Van and pulls out a length of rope. Daichi attempts to jump out of the creature's path but instead leaps straight into the creatures talons. the Wyvern takes Daichi and swoops over the party's heads.

Round 2: The Wyvern bites into Daichi's shoulder. Tef takes off after the creature. Van Zan, being in the front, hastily secures his grappling hook to the rope and runs at a heightened pace before attempting to lasso the flying beast. Brood runs to keep up with Van but finds his little legs insufficient. Daichi, desperate and hurt from the talons, attempts to wound the creatures leg and is suddenly yanked backwards and around as the Grappling hook finds a home in his boot. He smashes to the ground taking a decent amount of damage. The Wyvern comes around for another pass.

Round 3: As the monster approaches van twirls his wieghted rope and attempts to again lasso the beast with the added help of Daichi the flying squirrel. He misses and Daichi takes more damage. Brood cuts him free from the rope. Tef jumps into the air attempts to catch the monster in his icy breath but is disheartened to find that his frozen breath weapon is not yet ready to perform. Daichi gets the Grappling hook from his boot and fires a hastey shot, hits. The Wyvern swoops around for another pass having missed Van Zan.

Round 4: The Wyvern punches a hole into Teffelyn with his stinger leaving a small amount of poison within as it continues its back and forth routine. Brood refastens the hook to a new length of rope and passes it to Van. Van tries once more for the rodeo and this time makes the cut, downing the creature and himself. Tef sluggishly charges asthe poison burns through him. Daichi dives into a fissure and waits, hidden until his heightened senses pick up figures approaching.

Round 5: The Wyvern tears into Van with its massive jaws. The two man giants decide to wreste the creature as the rope begins to entangle the entire mass. Brood heals himself as he rolls rom under the Wyvern that flattened him as it crashed down to the ground. Daichi quickly hps out of the fissure and fires down at the Orcs planning an ambush... fumbles and falls back into the whole.

Rounds 6-12: The Orcs attempt to subdue Daichi by pummeling him while Tef, Van and Brood fight the Wyvern and the rope. Brood shoves his hand into an open wound and cast cause light wounds as Tef bites chunk after chunk out of the creature's neck. All of this weakens the monster to the point when Van breaks its neck. Daichi fights his way free only to be shot in the back by an arrow. As Brood heals him Tef makes short work of most of the Orcs leaving 1 who seemed destined to go Grizlegrom. The rest of the rounds saw Brood, Tef and Daichi trying to kill the Orc that was beginning to feel the tingling sensation of leveling until a Hold Person ended his ascention. Van on the other hand ran to the aid of you NPCs as Orcs began to pour out of fissures and killed dozens of Orcs by running them over.

Round 13: More Orcs arrive as the party is ambushed in the dead of night...

Ambush in the Dead of Night

Orcs were suddenly everywhere. They rose up out of the fissures like swarming bugs armed with falchions and shortbows. The former Dragonslayers had faced their betters during the orcish seige of northern farstmore but as they'd learned before, numbers can make the difference. Van Zan's, like the unstoppable juggernaut of mythology, plowed over Orcs like a farmer tilling the soil. Hazaka, Calm, Chase, naz and Sagitarius fought side by side as dozens of the humanoids smashed against them like angry blade wielding waves. Daichi and Brood on the other hand had a different task before them, free Teffelyn from his selfimposed stone prison.

Naz, realizing that the battle was beginning to turn against them, ordered the party to fall back towards the only bastian of safety the no man's land around Van. The monks' and the centaur's superior mobility left Chase and Naz stranded and alone against twenty of the red eyed monsters. Chase charged into the oncoming enemy leaving Naz with two choices: leave a man behind or go once more into the breach. Without any hesitation he spun into combat with a leap and twirl of his scimitars and the two were suddenly back to back.

Van Zan crushed another orc as the fleeing party members reached him. He assessed the situation, the condition of the party and the absence of both Chase and Naz and gave orders of his own. Head to the shelter of the mountain walls and hild the line. He was going to save the Dervish and the 'Merchant'. He ran and as he increased his speed he could see his target a mass of orcs moving straight toward the duo and the point of impact that would mean death to those too slow or stupid to get out of the way.

Round 16: Chase and Naz cut down one orc each, reducing the horde from nineteen to seventeen. The horde is two rounds away. van Zan is three rounds away.

Round 17: Naz fumbles flat on his face and chase grabs him and falls back. Both take moderate damage from the orc archers that harasses them as the main orc force presses closer. Van is two round away. The seventeen orcs are one round away.

Round 18: Naz heals Chase who is on his last leg and the two move back, bracing for the horde that is upon them. Ocrs rain down blow after blow upon the two adventurers leaving them both extremely close to death. Van Zan wil be there in one turn but it might be too late.

Round 19: Van Zan smashes into the orcs killing three as he moves through their ranks in a ragged L. It is all Naz and Chase can do to jump out of the way. The blows continue and both gnome and elf are left to bleed out. Brood and Diachi climb out of the fissure to the sight of battle.

Round 20: Van uses the orcs to slow his rush and unsheaths his sword in an arcing swath that kills eight orcs with little effort, reducing their numbers to nine. Daichi disappears presumably to find Sinn, Brood gets his bearings. Teffelyn struggles the rest of his way out of the fissure. Most of the orcs flee, seeing the impressive might of JUSTICE though three step foward to face Van Zan in single combat.

Round 21: Some of the fleeing orcs abscond with Chase and Naz. Van's first oponent lunges foward and scores and decent blow on the arrow covered man giant. Van returned the blow leaving only two orcs to face him. Brood chases the orc bearing Naz and Sinn adds some arrows into the monster to make things easier. Teffelyn hurries toward Van.

Rounds 22- Finish: Van kills another foe and the third flees. Brood fights an orc for custody of Naz and wins with mere seconds to save the gnome. Van chases a Chase's body to a crevasse too narow for his armor but just wide enough for Teff who charges in to save his companion. He slays orc after orc and finds the elf.

Chase narrowly avoids death and the party falls back to safer ground. The party rest for the nght and plans to enter the caves within the fissures by the light of day to capitalize on the orc's light sensitivity. The next morning the party repells down into the fissure and makes their way to the cave mouth scouted by Daichi.

Cave Mouth I

Cramped quarters and darkness swallow the party as they venture into the bowels of the craggy flats. Van Zan Shazam, Teffelyn, Brood and Naz Imanseek out the source of corruption within The Black Mountains. They search expecting Giants, Devils and othe vile nemesis but instead find two dozen Orcs in a small collection of chambers. Short work is made of them and the group finds their treasure, a collection of clothing and gold taken from an attacked caravan. Van Zan notices that the only thing missing are the two crystal sculptures of imprisoned elven women. If he was unsure of his current course this alone proves that these are in fact the monsters that have been terrorizing the area south of Frost.

The party leaves the goods behind and exits the cave system to the sound of fighting above the fissure. They hurry and emerge to see their allies being attacked by yet more Orcs. Sagitarius alone stands against the rush of brutes as the others were quickly overrun. Naz and Brood pair up and fight their way towards the Centaur as Van wades into the group surounding Calm. It is as he easily dispatches a trio of humanoids that a ear splitting sound heralds a fist sized ball of hot metal shatters his shoulder armor. A second shot missed, narrowly. Far in the distance the party spots a faux boulder fleeing the area and they give chase. They lose the 'boulder' at a fissure wide enough for a giant to sneak through and after almost a half an hout of looking Naz is shot.

Determined not to lose this chance to confront a Black Giant in its home, the party works its way down into the crevasse...

Giants and Gun Powder

The party works its way down into the cracks of the mountain in search of a Giant sniper. What they find are four Giant warior types. Fter Van cripples the vanguard the wounds and fatigue of the group swiftly begins to take its toll. The fight is furious and bloody with Van, Teff and Brood going down in quick succession. Sagitarius' heroic acts buys the party a few rounds but it soon becomes a losing battle. It takes the combined efforts of the NPCs; Sinn, Diachi, and Naz, as well as the quick thinking of Chase to finally slay the brutes.

Beaten and broken the party can not leave the fissure so Naz puts the elves to work. Three days and nights of constant watch while he first healed Brood then Van, once the onther healers were up it was only a matter of time before the ret of the group of heroes were in fighting shape. The Giants are eventually searched and a collection of useless trinkets. Dissatisfied the party begins to look for the Giants' lair for they did not carry enough supplies to be far from home... and the sniper was still nowhere to be found.

The monsters' cache was found and loot was acquired but not before a trap is triggered that ignites the mounds of gunpouder within. No casualties, but the party needs yet another day to recouperate. It is on that fourth night in the crevasse, drawn by the triggered explosions that the Orcs fall upon the beset group of adventurers...

It is that fourth night that our tale continues...

*Doom of the Pastless*

Starting with tonight's session, players without backgrounds will be recieving 1/2 experience and are being restricted to class and racial abilities.

ex. Clerics with no backgrounds can not do first aid.

Players will be expected to stick to the actions that they take whether they were paying attention to what's going on or not. This is especially for Phobos and Lancelot who never pay attention and get angry when their actions result in unfortunate events.

Orc Party I

The Orc outnumber the active PCs 2 to one, which gave our heroes a distinct advantage. That coupled with superior equipment and battle tactic should have made the fight simple... but learning to work as a team is still the party's weak point. As van barked out orders and battle instructions Teff gives them no regard as he charges toward the biggest cluster of enemies. Arrow after arrow bombard the man-dragon and he is almost down before his blade is truly bloodied. Chase slunk into the shadows and Van made himself a human barricade that the orcs smashed into before dying. Teff fell back to the party ranks wounded but redeemed his giving into the taint by releasing a gout of his breath weapon that killed all it touched. As fast as the battle began it was over with the heroes standing victorious. It was during the searching of the enemy that an arrow fell Sinn. Van and Chase hunt down the hidden shooter and thwart his attempts to escape.

He is killed and the orc threat is eliminated. Nohing of great value is found and he group rest for one more night. The next day the party sets out to find that which they seek. It is night fall before they finally leave the graggy fissure filled expance and come to a lightly grassed area. Encouraged by the change of terrain the party looks for water. Chase takes a dive and finds that the small pool is really the cap to an underground lake.

Unfortunately the party finds nothing of value and beds down for the night hoping to find signs of the giants at the next opportunity...
