Demon Hunters Neo Genesis

The story thus far…

50 years after the climactic events that brought the original Demon Hunters Campaign to a close the Material Plane is a no less complex or violent place. From those last bastions of civilization; The Tri Cities (now know as the Unified Nations), The Republic of Asia, The Magic Sanctuaries (now The Nation of Magical Learning), and The Red Kingdom, man has begun to populate once more. New provinces have grown out of the corpse of the former United States of America. One such territory is that of New Genesis. Much like the country whose bones she now occupies New Genesis was founded on the idea of religious freedom and the need of a new religious sect for autonomy. Still in the dawn of its existence New Genesis is plagued by lawlessness and banditry abound as well as the very present threat of Nameless and other perils. Thus the Marshals were formed.

Each player is either a Marshal of New Genesis or in some way support staff of the marshals:

Ivory Reagan NoNo- Shapeshifter(Modified Contemporary), Jack of all Trades, Secret Agent, Pop Star
Hadley Shore Darlene- True Angel, Sword and Spear Expert
Aquilla Rai Laura- Human, Ninja
Darren Maxwell Fat Mike- Human, Archer and Mechanic
Castor D’Orious Lance- Hunter Plus, Mage of the Celestial School
Lilith Jefferson Laura- Demi-Demon, Mid-Level Organized Crime boss
Logan Aberstein Fat Mike- Modified Human, Wolverine Type Guy(lol)
Sharlough Creed Lance- Animus, Ninja
Sara Laura- Vampire, Priest
**Lilith is the only character that has permanently died, the others were switched for various reasons mostly player dissatisfaction.

From the beginning of the game The Marshals have been heavily entrenched in cleaning up New Genesis and dealing with her largest bandit gang, The Red Men. For two years, in-game, skirmishes and battles have pitted the small group of lawmen against a horde of maniacs very much modeled after the mindless bandits of “Borderlands”. The leaders of the Red Men are a group of bloodthirsty men known as the Hicks. As they mopped up the last vestiges of the Hicks it becomes clear that banditry is the least of New Genesis’ troubles. West of the Province in the lands run by various warlords has arisen an army of undead lead by a man calling himself Mordrid Magnus. Magnus’ army has crushed all of the warlords under heel and swelled his ranks with the vanquished and he has New Genesis in his sights.

It is while the nation prepares for the coming war that strange blue-skinned assassins make attempts against both PC and NPC Marshals. It is revealed that these killers are a group of expensive mercenaries known as The Life Hunters hired to eliminate the law enforcers. As the marshals divert their attentions to dealing with their would-be killers the western most border of New Genesis is attacked by a host of undead monsters. They make an end to their assassins only to find that they were hired not by Magnus but by some mysterious and yet unidentified enemy…

The PCs are charged with getting to Fort Morgan, with which communications have ceased, and securing the evacuation of a dozen people of importance to The New Genesis Council, among them Councilwoman Gillian Aaron. After 3 days of nearly nonstop riding they arrive at the Fort to find it under attack by a mass of zombies tirelessly beating against its crumbling walls. They manage to gain entrance and split up to find the people they were sent to save.

Their problem, Fort Morgan is going to fall to Magnus’ Undead host but the stronghold is brimming with wounded too damaged to travel on their own, soldiers from both the newly trained New Gen Army and The Blue Sash mercenary army, as well as the force of Treeoids that have always commanded the fort. Most of the PCs wish to just snatch their targets and flee the doomed location but none of the NPCs wish to leave the helpless to die.

What would you all do?

Its to easy to just book it. I wold at least create an "Ohhhh-Sit escape plan", then take the challenge of Saving the Fort.

If We succeed we get mucho EXP and in-game props. If we fail and live, then it was a worthy adventure....and story. We could also gain in-game props.

Also, i bet the fort has a secret escape tunnel for the top brass or at least a sewer. Take the wounded there in stages. First the worst, the less wounded can at least act as mules.

it depends, if you was asking me well... they dead son! tough break! but if i was a character that was loyal to the cause and i knew that their life would have a "chance" at salvation, i would go down in flames like a hero. I would risk my life for these people who can protect my childrens, children.

The party sat through a strategy meeting with those in charge of Fort Morgan's defense and gave their opinions of how best to proceed with the evacuation. Though the players only cared about saving those they were sent for the PCs helped organize a plan that would save as many as possible (which renewed my faith in my players!). It was after the meeting that the Dark Rains started and even as the living defenders of the Doomed Fort began to feel disheartened and weak the undead at their gates and within their ranks felt empowered. That night proved to be a black one indeed for Ivory and Hadley.

After easily dispatching zombies aplenty they were confronted by a ghoul that proved much harder to defeat than a common undead. However Hadley's Scimitars and Ivory's martial arts are a force to be reckoned with. As they slew the grey skinned horror an even more dangerous enemy made itself known, the waste demons. These creatures are not only strong and resilient but possess the ability to produce a sludge that rots anything it touches. As the beast pounded the already weak marshals it also took its toll on their belongings. Out of rage and desperation Hadley took the battle to the air where she shoved a customized grenade inside the monster. Unfortunately she was unable to get out of the blast radius and removed herself from the fight. Wounded the Waste Demon began to kill her with blow after blow. It was Ivory who was then laid low attempting to save Hadley's body.

All would have been lost if it weren't for Sister Sara of the clergy and marshals. She joined the fray as her allies were defeated. Even with her formidable combat skills the Waster, as the soldiers call them, seemed indomitable until Sara called on the power of her faith and attempted to modify her prayer of water purification. Even then she might of failed had she not put a bit of her essence (Chi, Fatigue and Endurance) behind those sacred words. The cleansing light that followed destroyed not only her enemy but the other waste demons swooping down to destroy the fort's protectors.

In the end it all seemed useless as morning scouts warned of Magnus' true host approaching. The rout of Fort Morgan was a rushed and haphazard thing that saw a nearly 46% lose of life.

The marshals managed to get back to Aaron's Keep with all but one of those they were sent for and were sent home to set affairs in order because best case projections estimated Mordrid Magnus' forces would reach Aaron's Keep in 5 days and if Aaron's Keep fell there would be no safe haven within New Genesis for anything living...

“War. War never changes.

Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything: from God to justice to simple psychotic rage…

but war, war never changes”

-Fallout 3

Nearly three years have passed since New genesis had to defend its gates against the untiring and relentless assault of Mordrid Magnus’ Undead host. Thousands died, thousands were lost never to be seen again. In the end it was the NewGen Army that held the line and the Marshals who moved west into enemy controlled lands to bring a stop to the mad warlord’s tyranny. In the end New Genesis survived and has become all the stronger for her ordeal.

New Genesis has grown. A new railway, expansion beyond The Great Divide, increased functionality and effectiveness of the army. Through all of the loss and hardship the people have become a sturdier lot.

I the intervening time New Genesis has done some house cleaning: by ridding The Dark Reaches of The Tuathan cannibals and in the process awakening their masters, beings from beyond the edge of the universe who exist for the sole purpose of consuming all sentient life. New Genesis has been brought to heel: the council was kidnapped by the madman known as The Wizard King bringing commerce nearly to a standstill and causing strife between The NewGen Army and The Lord Marshals. Each milestone taught the people of the small nation how to stand taller and pushed their skill and resolve to the limit.

Even as it seemed that peace was on the horizon the greed of man persisted and the nation of Riverside set its sights on New Genesis. Fueled by their desire to claim the land that Mother Gaines built and backed by an army of sentient golems, war has returned to New genesis.

The mission was to overtake the town of Appleton. The squad consisted of four marshals, six sergeants, and lowly private (amongst some pets, a couple of villagers, and a witch [as others called her]). The goal was to take the town without too much bloodshed. Marshal Ivory went on ahead to scout, while the rest of the party waited patiently. During that time the private named Cray began to ponder about his mysterious past. Years ago, the young private was found with a large Bengal tiger by the soldiers of New Genesis. After being nursed back to health, the young man assisted then soon enlisted into the soldiers. An opportune meeting got him and his pet tiger Bast a chance to work with the Marshals. Since on this mission, though, weird events occurred between the private and his pet. Vivid dreams of wild hunts that end with both Cray and Bast with bloody tastes in both their mouths. Even at one point Cray felt he had switched bodies with the tiger. But as uncertain as that was, Cray was certain that he still had a job to do.

The moment that Marshal Ivory returned with info of the land, the private made his move. Seeing how the town was laid out, Cray developed a plan. Using the cover of darkness, he suggested to take the two guard towers to minimize any chances of an alert. Once those were down, the private then opted for the group to take out golems that were guarding the town. As others chimed in their opinions, Cray took them under advisement, and even accepted and incorporated them into the main plan. The idea of explosives was introduced, and Cray acted upon it. It was implied that the golems were easily damaged by the bombs. There was also worry that the town some distance to the south, which was controlled by the enemy, would act upon the explosions. The group decided that the best thing was to create a diversion so no one could really know what was going on. Feeling it would be more effective, Cray suggested that Sergeant Paul would create the diversion while Sergeant Adrian, the better explosive expert, to work with the team in fighting the golems. The witch summoned skeletons to fight along side. Feeling it would be prudent and a grand tactic, Cray asked to have bombs attached to the undead.

The plan was set. The party began the attack after dusk. Each move went with little issues. The only major problem to arise was the first golem. The main plan with that was to blind it so by the time it had a chance to react it would be too late. However, Cray was a bit husky in size, and found it hard to sneak up on the construct. Spotting him and the witch, the sentient mechanoid attacked as the spell caster conjured her magic to blind it. But the two were wise, utilizing the black mist to keep cover. They were able to remove themselves from combat. As the mission went on, Cray and Bast was attacked by a second golem. He and Adrian were stunned but Cray quickly recovered. The private maintained his cool, saving his collegue. An opportunity arose when Sergeant Chadwich blasted a chunk out of the clay-like structure. Cray took aim and blasted the weakest point on the device, a gem that was hidden. The shot blew out the device, causing the machine to shut down, Allowing the inscurrsion to go on without so much as a problem.

A reckoning approaches.

It is the year 55 Modern Era. Our heroes and antiheroes, The New Genesis Marshals, have done much in the past five years to settle the frontier nation that they serve. They wiped out the psychopathic Bandit organization known as The Red Men. They pushed back Mordrid Magnus and his undead army, saving countless lives. They defeated the Tuathan cult and the InBetweener they worshiped. Most recently they've ended the bloody war between New Genesis and her neighbor Riverside. Every challenge has been met head on and though they've lost a few allies they have gained piece of mind.

Yet the threat still lingers like a fragrance on the wind. Flowers, The Council of Flowers. The secret cabal has repeatedly proven to be the puppet master behind nearly every attack upon the marshals. Agents like the manipulator, Gwendolyn Frost, and the assassin, Thorn, have left their mark where ever the new Demon Hunters have gone. Most recently it has been discovered that the Riverside Warmachine had been but pawns in a game played by a Council of Flowers agent by the name of Poison. The Marshals grow tired of being toyed with and soon they will get a chance to confront their tormentors.

War never changes

the act of sin... the theft of innocence... the tainting of thine soul...

The party stand on the precipice. They are members of a group calling itself The Three Orders and have one goal to save the planes and all existence from the coming darkness. A tall task in normal circumstances but these are not normal circumstances these might just be the end times.

Standing in their way:

The armies of The Dark Ancients-
When The Ancients made the final decision to create the planes and seal life away from the devourers of reality there was a small group that was opposed to the plan. They wanted to use those precious resources needed for such a task to fight the monsters. They rebelled violently and were imprisoned. That was millions of years ago, The Ancients have died off and their pet project has prospered. unfortunately the leader of The Dark Ancients has been freed and he has no use for the planes and the waste they represent. he has called the faithful to him and is scouring the planes and demi-planes for his former compatriots. His plan is clear: repurpose the planes and all life on them, and use those resources to fight back The Imbetweeners.

The Imbetweeners-
Before the Ancients there existed a race of monstrous beings that feasted on the sentience of others. Eventually they consumed all others leaving the universe empty and devoid of life other than their own. The elders of that dark and hungry race devised a plan to sustain their existence. They created new life and fled to the places between the galaxies where time flowed differently, where they could wait for sentience to grow. When they returned the Ancients created a place where they could not reach or so they hoped. But even the barriers around the planes can't last forever and the darkness is coming.

With such powerful enemies arrayed against them The Demon Hunters have their work cut out for them.

Currently The Three Orders are fighting both on separate fronts but with each passing day the war is expanding. At the moment most of the main planes are unaware of just what kind of shit their in but soon, soon they will know. War is abundant. The nations of The Material Plane battle for supremacy while the missionaries, The Cho Ahg, of the Dark Ancients attempt to convert the masses on Vapor, and in Hell. The gates of Heaven have been closed for decades and currently The Inbetweeners have made an appearance on Mechanixia. Wherever the party goes they seem to run into Dark Ancient soldiers, The Cho Ahn, on similar quest.

All in all the only real respite for the party is their short time on the demi-plane of Avalon which The Three Orders call home. Its unique make up makes it undetectable by The Cho Ahn or The Imbetweeners... for now.

I'm finding it fun but the players are experience varying levels of despair or disconnection. They either feel like they are going to die so they don't care what's going on or they dream of starting their own little kingdom away from the fighting. These are dark times but I feel bad for them.

Personally, I feel that once you feel you're going to die, that's a bad situation. You have to always have a plan to get out and survive or you don't connect with your character, so why play?

I agree but sometimes the way out isn't evident. in that case it should be about survival but they just give up or complain. The game difficulty is getting harder but only because I know they can surmount the obstacles.

They are in the middle of fighting the equivalent of a baby or infant Imbetweener. As with the last one they'd fought Whigma is in the form or a grotesque aquatic creature, a squid this time, and 'she' exhibits a form of aquakinesis. The creature gets 5 attacks a turn and while the party is forced to fight underwater the environment is dealing 10 damage that ignores armor.

Sara is excited and having fun fighting a powerful enemy. Ivory is complaining about not being able to swim and being low on health. Cary is doing his best to help on damage but as we wrapped up went on a tangent about the enemy being too hard. They are fighting a boss with a Capital B, it shouldn't be easy. But it isn't out of their ability but bad decisions and fear is stealing the day as always.

Will they survive? We shall see.
