Our Story So Far

A group of adventurers hired by Father Nicky ventured into The Blackscale Swamp in search of Donnerschlag, Thor's second hammer.  Through lizard men and cultist they manage to acquire the item and return it to The Temple of Thor within the city of Kharington.  Unfortunately the relic proved to not only be the wrong hammer but cursed by the cult.  The item possessed Father Nicky and led him south to an ancient prison from the advent of man known as The World Tree.  There a blizzard of epic proportions pounded the kingdom’s central region.  The party attempted to find the priest and return the item to the temple but found that he had inexplicably released enemies from man's past.  Namely the frost giants and undead warned of in Norse theology.  The party returned Father Nicky and the hammer but had more important matters to settle, The Tree needed to be closed and the hammer was one of three keys necessary to do so.  The party battled through a multitude of monsters and a myriad of unfamiliar worlds but managed to return Father Nicky and the weapon to The Temple of Thor.

At the temple the party learned the magnitude of their troubles, by a council of high priest led by The High Priest of Thor.  The weapon was not Donnerschlag as was believed, but the artifact Eisen-Schlussel forged alongside two other weapons to act as devices to open or close the dimensional doorways of The Tree.  With the portions of The Tree locked by the Norse key open frost giants were free to walk the world of man once more, bringing with them a boundless winter.  Also free were Fenrir, The Wolf, and Hel, Queen of the Undead.  Unless they were put back within their prison they would bring about Ragnarok.  Unfortunately The Tree could not be closed with only one key.  The Tree was a bridge between many worlds and the decision to trap such creatures within was not one made lightly.  It fell to the three dominant faiths at the time; Norse, Egyptian, and Christian.  It would take The Sun Blade, and The Bolt of Saint Peter to seal the breach.  The whereabouts of these weapons/keys were known by only one person, an ancient sage known as The Oracle of Ulon.  So while a foreign hero known as The Paladin of Providence went south to slow down the emerging giants, the party was charged with finding The Oracle.

They tracked the oracle to an abandoned temple of Ra on the northern border of Quinlain but were hindered by assassins and a mercenary band known as The Lightning Lords.  The party fought their way through the hired soldiers and had a confrontation with their leader, who proved to be a snakekin in disguise.  Having saved the oracle she graciously, though enigmatically, shares the whereabouts of the second key.  She promised to meet them back in Kharington with directions to the third key, but first they would need to acquire The Sun Blade and fast.  The snakekin were hot on the trail, these creatures have hunted the keys for years and had had a hand in Father Nicky’s possession.

The first step was finding The Fortress in The Mist.  There Magnus bested a Grimlock champion to gain an item that would get the party past the first guardian of the key.  Their next step was to travel to a land blighted by an ancient grudge with the curse of undead.  It was through such a place, The Doun Land the former seat of power of The Doun, that they fought through hordes of zombies to the old Doun Palace.  The palace was guarded by a ghastly giant missing his eye, an eye that Magnus won through fair combat.  Darius presented the eye and the guard allowed them passage.  Inside they battle ghostly warriors doomed to relive their last day over and over.  Thanks to the efforts of Torin and Jareth the party was able to find the palace treasury.  Within was an extraplanar being that sought the keys to The Tree for itself.  The oracle had managed to trap it in a barrier but the heroes needed to break its seal to get to The Sun Blade.  They defeated the monster and fled the cursed lands.

All that was left was to return to Kharington and report back to the awaiting High Priest...

The Main Characters

Jareth Carri
-Feliruu Cleric
A quiet simpleton with an unwavering faith in The Earth Mother, Gaia, and the leadership of his party’s leaders.  He works to protect the realm of Quinlain from the mistakes of his companions with little to no thoughts of his heritage and the animosity towards man that comes with it.  He was touched by Bog Witch, Cammelle, and warned of his destiny: Protecting The Balance.  The question remains, what does that mean and is he ready to do it.

Magnus
-Half-orc Fighter
A half-tusker mercenary turned unlikely hero.  He fights to protect his allies with a mighty axe bearing his namesake.  He was once a sellsword but now bends his considerable strength towards saving a realm that would forsake him for his tainted blood.

Etrigan
-Feliruu Assassin
A sly and shady character catkin skilled in slaying men and keeping his companions alive.  His selfish pursuits should put him at odds with his allies but up until now their goals have matched his own.  The grimlocks of The Fortress in The Mist called him ‘The Cat That Would’, but what would this murderous cat do?  He now wields The Sun Blade, the Egyptian key to The World Tree.

Darius Pendragon
-Human Paladin Cleric
The Pendragons of Dalluvian’s Pearl have historically been Paladins but Darius has broken away from tradition.  Odin called him to The World Tree where he met the party and learned of the threat to Quinlain and her neighboring nations.  Believing it was his destiny to spread the word of Odin, he threw down his hammer, and raised high the scripture and doctrine of The Norse Pantheon.  He now joins Jareth and Bouldershoulder as the spiritual backbone of the party that would save the world.

Squeezle
-Human Fighter
Once a member of the one-two punch known as The Kensington Duo, Squeezle has since become a stalwart member of the party.  Magnus has taken him under his wing and Gemini has grown quite attached to him.  Beside his mentor there are very few martial threats that can stand against his Heavy Flail.

Gemini
-Human Wizard
The Mage of The Magnificent Hat was given a second lease on life by the party and has stood by their side ever since.  His magic is at their disposal and his knowledge has pulled their fat out of the fire more than once.  Like many among the party, his true devotion has not been put to the test but if his actions in The Doun Lands is any example then he will prove up to the task of saving Quinlain.

Feldor Bouldershoulder
-Dwarf Cleric
Etrigan’s big brother from another mother and partner in crime, this dwarf pounds his faith home with an iron fist.  That fist now wields Eisen-Schlussel, the first key to The World Tree.  He lacks the backing of The Norse Gods necessary to truly utilize the weapon but he holds it close and protects it with his life.  He once led the party but took a step back to let younger heads handle the drudgery of finding the other keys.

Marcus Goodman
-Human Rogue
A confusing mix of machismo and skullduggery, Mr. Marcus’s goals are unknown and unknowable.  Only one thing is clear about his motivations, he intends to make a name for his prowess in bed and the wealth in his pocket.  He too was touched by Bog Witch, Cammelle.  Does that mean that his destiny is intertwined with Jareth’s or does it mean that his fate is on a different path.

Torin Quietus
-Human Assassin Druid
Torin serves many masters but none as completely as The Balance.  He seeks to ensure the continual cycle of life/death chaos/order that keeps the world in tune with nature.  To that end his blade has been sent out into the world and he endeavors to apply it wherever he must to keep the scales from tipping.

Darnell’s Druid
-Human Druid
Not much is known about this woman or her motivations.  Time will tell if she stays with the party or is replaced with another would-be hero.[/b]

Cambria wrote:Well, they wouldn't have to be searching for her, if they don't care...  They would be searching for the map.

The players can't focus enough to commit to such a task.  They'd either forget what they were searching for mid-adventure or mid-session(depending on whose present), or too many would die against easy monsters and their new toons would not be in on the mission.  Truth is the more I think about it the more I lose faith in the players succeeding on any mission.

Yikes!

Why is this post from 2015 still relevant? You guys...
